MRI, CT, ultrasound, EMG — the equipment listed on clinic profiles has specific purposes. Here's what each one is actually used to look for.
Imaging: MRI, CT, X-ray, and ultrasound
These four often get lumped together as "scans," but they're built for different jobs. MRI uses magnets rather than radiation and is the standard choice for soft tissue — torn ligaments and cartilage (an ACL or a meniscus tear, for example), herniated spinal discs, and brain abnormalities including stroke damage or tumors. It's slower and typically the more expensive of the two cross-sectional scans, but it sees soft tissue detail that a CT can't.
CT (computed tomography) is a fast, cross-sectional X-ray. It's usually the first choice after trauma — internal bleeding, organ injury, complex fractures — and it's also standard for kidney stones and lung nodules. Where MRI is chosen for tissue detail, CT is usually chosen for speed and bone/structural detail.

EMG and nerve conduction studies do the equivalent for nerves and muscles, measuring electrical signals to find where a nerve is compressed or damaged. This is the test behind a carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis, a pinched nerve in the neck or back, or peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage that often shows up as numbness or tingling in the hands or feet).

A bone density scan is a low-dose scan built specifically to measure bone mineral density — it's the standard test for osteoporosis and osteopenia, and for tracking fracture risk over time rather than diagnosing a single injury.
Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast. It's the standard test for diagnosing and monitoring asthma and COPD, and for working out unexplained shortness of breath.
